What is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing basically means that you’re going to be a salesman for various companies and collect a commission on anything you sell. You’ll promote these products and services on your website and do your best to entice people to sign up using your referral links. The tricky part is actually getting people to sign up using your referral links. Use my affiliate marketing tips to get more referrals.

Affiliate Marketing Tips That Work

I’ve been using affiliate marketing as a way of monetizing my blogs for years now and have had a great deal of success. It’s not exactly rocket science but there’s a lot of things that people overlook when it comes to affiliate marketing. These are my best affiliate marketing tips and techniques that will definitely improve your sales numbers.

1) Build your traffic

It may seem obvious but having a steady flow of blog traffic is the best way to sell more product. More visitors equals more potential sales. This is one of the most important affiliate marketing tips there is.

It isn’t quite as simple as that though. You want to actually have quality traffic on your blog. Quality means having readers that are interested in what you have to say and are passionate about the things you’re promoting.

Follow my guide on increasing your blog traffic to learn more about the subject.

2) Only sell products related to your blogs niche

You wouldn’t try to sell an air conditioner to an eskimo would you? Of course not! The same principle applies with affiliate marketing on your blog.

Only sell products and services that are actually related to the topics you write about on your blog. This ensures that your readers will want to learn more about the products you’re promoting.

3) Promote products that you’ve used

Having first-hand experience with your affiliates’ products makes promoting them much easier. This allows you to explain to your readers in greater detail the benefits of purchasing a particular product or service.

An example is if you’re trying to promote HostGator, it helps if you actually have web hosting with them. You could write a blog post explaining to people all of your positive experiences using HostGator and the benefits you’ve noticed while using their services.

Being genuine and truthful to your readers goes a long way to making more sales.

4) Use your blog posts for promotion

Most people will just put a banner in the sidebar or at the top of the page and then leave it at that. This is a HUGE mistake! Only using banners for your affiliate marketing is losing you potential sales. Sure, banners can still be effective, but using promotion directly in your blog posts will increase sales tremendously.

I’ve discovered that using your own words to market a product gets more attention than some flashy banner off to the side of the page. It allows you to be creative in how you promote it. Writing about something within a blog post feels much more personal and tailored to your specific audience.

5) Make your affiliate links look nicer

Which of these looks better to you:

or

I’m just going to assume that you chose the second link. Having a nice looking URL may seem silly but it makes a big difference in the way people perceive it. Your blog visitors are less likely to click on links that are long and contain a bunch of random words, numbers, and symbols.

It’s not about trying to hide your affiliate links from people either. Instead, it’s about making your site look nicer, more professional, and easier for people to understand. You definitely shouldn’t try to lie or hide things from your visitors.

6) Promote multiple products

I’m sure you’ve all heard the saying “don’t put all your eggs in one basket“. Only promoting one product is very risky when it comes to affiliate marketing and can lead to trouble in the future.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket

If you rely on the income you get from being an affiliate with only one company then you’re completely at their mercy. Your entire income can be taken away if anything were to happen to them. There are a lot of different opportunities for affiliate marketers on the Internet so make sure you diversify.

7) Know your readers

You need to understand who the people are that come to your site on a regular basis. Try to put yourself in the same frame of mind that a visitor of your site would be in. By doing that you’ll be able to further improve your sales techniques. Here’s what you should be aware of regarding your readers:

  • What products are they interested in
  • How much are they willing to spend on something
  • When do people usually buy the things you’re selling

8) Be more personal

I kind of touched on this earlier at the end of tip 4 but I thought I should explain a little more. Blogging is all about having a more personal relationship with your readers. This needs to carry over to your affiliate marketing as well.

When talking about a product, don’t come across sounding like a used car salesman. Talking like a salesman makes it sound like you’re only interested in getting a sale and not trying to do what’s best for your readers. You’ll have a much more difficult time keeping people coming back to your blog if they think you’re only interested in pushing products down their throats.

9) Promote outside of your blog

You don’t have to focus solely on getting sales through your blog. There are numerous opportunities on the Internet to get your affiliate links out there.

Every blogger should be collecting email addresses by having a newsletter. An email newsletter is an amazing marketing tool. A big reason for that is because a lot of times people will sign up for your newsletter and then not come back to your blog. By sending out newsletter on a regular basis you’ll remind these people about you and your site.

Social media is also a great place to talk to people about your products and services. Just make sure you follow my previous affiliate marketing tips of keeping it personal and not sounding too much like a salesman.

10) Don’t sell too many products

New bloggers will find it very tempting to sign up for every affiliate marketing opportunity on the Internet. It seems like such a smart way to make as much money as possible. Unfortunately, this isn’t a good strategy.

Having too many options will only confuse people and they won’t want to spend their money. Keep things simple and don’t try and sell multiple things that serve the same purpose.

11) Keep your blog clean and professional

Invest in a good quality WordPress theme for your blog. If your site looks nice and professional people will be more likely to take you and your opinions seriously. Free WordPress themes are usually pretty terrible looking and not very appropriate for businesses.

Once you have your blog set up, don’t give in to the temptation of plastering ads all over the place. This is one of the biggest things that drives traffic off of blogs. Only have a few ads on a single page and do a lot of your promotion in the actual content of your posts.

12) Use your affiliate link on images

This is one of the most overlooked affiliate marketing tips there is. A lot of bloggers don’t link their images to the product page using their affiliate url. Make sure that you don’t forget to add your affiliate link after you upload an image and insert it into your post. People like to click on images so make sure you use that to your advantage.
